October 16 marks the 77th anniversary since the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Quebec, Canada, since 1945. FAO established in 1979 that October 16 would mark World Food Day. Romania adopted October 16 as the National Day of Food and Food Waste Combat, through Law nr. 47/2016. Today, World Food Day is celebrated in more than 150 countries.

The aim of this anniversary is to raise public awareness of global food issues and strengthen solidarity in the fight against hunger, malnutrition, and poverty. Therefore, World Food Day is an opportunity to organize events dedicated to the universal program of global action in the field of sustainable development, respectively to achieve the second goal inscribed on the 2030 Agenda, assumed by UN member states at the end of 2015. Thus, Goal 2 ("Zero hunger") aims to eradicate hunger, ensure food security, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture.

October 16 became the Day of the Faculty of Food Science and Engineering by the Decision of the Faculty Council nr. 28/01.10.2021. Therefore, the Faculty of Food Science and Engineering of "Dunarea de Jos" University of Galati expresses its solidarity and commitment in promoting the purpose of this day, especially through education and research-development-innovation activities that ensure knowledge transfer to the socio-economic environment.
