On September 19, 2023, Professor Valentin TURLAN, PhD (born on September 6, 1938, Voinesti, Dambovita). His academic career began on September 15, 1960, by government assignment, at the end of his university studies at the "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University of Iasi, Faculty of Letters, Romanian language, and literature – history section.

 Under the scientific coordination of Professor Gavril Istrate, PhD, he defended his doctorate at the "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University of Iasi, with the paper Terminology of fishing in the Danube area (1973). He naturally went through all stages of his teaching career in higher education. In his 45 years of teaching activity, he held courses in General Linguistics, Contemporary Romanian Language. Phonetics and phonology, Contemporary Romanian language. Lexicology, Contemporary Romanian language. Syntax and Introduction to Scientific Research Technique.

Professor Valentin TURLAN has always been interested in scientific activity, participating in national and local linguistics conferences and symposiums, publishing numerous articles in specialized journals ("Romanian Language", "Linguistic Studies and Research", "Yearbook of Linguistics and Literary History"), university courses, published by the publishing house of the "Dunarea de Jos" University of Galati, and specialized books, General linguistics being the best known by all generations of Galati students.

He initiated and coordinated the appearance of the "Language and Literature" series of Annals of the "Dunarea de Jos" University of Galati.
His scientific activity is completed with his participation, within the Institute of Philology Romanian "A. Philippide" of the Romanian Academy – Iasi Branch, in the elaboration of the work Toponymic Treasure of Romania. Moldova. Volume I. Historical repertoire of administrative-territorial units. 1772-1988. Part I, A. Simple units (Localities and estates), A–O, Bucharest, Academy Publishing House, 1991, Dragos Moldovanu (coordinator) and Valentin TURLAN (collaborator); the volume received the "Timotei CIPARIU" Award of the Romanian Academy.

At "Dunarea de Jos" University of Galati, he was head of department and dean of the Faculty of Letters, History and Theology (1996-2000), his concern being to create a team of well-trained teachers in the field. Professor Valentin TURLAN has permanently encouraged young teachers to improve themselves professionally, by participating at international and national conferences, by publishing studies and scientific papers and by completing doctoral theses.

At the didactic level, he coordinated numerous bachelor's papers, participated, as president or coordinator, in many first-degree papers for teachers in the pre-university cycle. Professor Valentin Turlan's activity was related to the pre-university environment, being general inspector at the Galati County School Inspectorate.

Towards the end of his academic career, his outstanding merits in the field of education and research were officially recognized by awarding the Order "Merit for Education" first class (2004), and colleagues from the Department of Literature, Linguistics and Journalism dedicated the volume Homage to Professor Valentin TURLAN on the occasion of his 70th birthday, published in the first issue of the magazine "Common Lexicon / Specialized Lexicon",  Fascicula XXIV of the Annals of "Dunarea de Jos" University of Galati (2008), volume coordinated by Doina Marta BEJAN, Virginia LUCATELLI and Oana CENAC.

Professor Valentin TURLAN has remained and will remain in the memory of generations of students through professionalism and exigency, and in the memory of those who had the chance and honor to be his colleagues, through the correct, collegial, and responsible attitude in making decisions for the department and for the faculty, alike.
