The 2nd edition of the “Student Design & Manufacturing Competition” National Competition took place between 10 -11 November and it was hosted by the Department of Manufacturing Engineering within the Faculty of Technological Engineering and Industrial Management of “Transilvania” University of Brasov. The purpose of this competition is to promote creativity in the manufacturing process by providing new perspectives to the engineering community in conceptual product development, and to create, develop and maintain a student forum for the purpose of popularizing new and innovative ideas.

The competition’s topic was: computer-aided manufacturing/robotics, development of manufacturing systems and processes, applications of new materials in the automotive industry, aerospace, prototyping and prosthetics, and software/hardware solutions that contribute to the improvement of manufacturing processes.
 
Teams formed of undergraduate and master’s students from different university centers participated at the event: “Transilvania” University of Brasov, University “Politehnica” of Bucharest, Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, “Gheorghe Asachi” University of Iasi, “Dunarea de Jos” University of Galati, University of Oradea and “Nicolae Balcescu” Land Forces Academy. Students presented ingenious projects, putting the competition’s jury in a difficult position which was formed of representatives of prestigious companies.
 
Substantial awards were offered by the Manufacturing Engineering University Association - AUIF. Prizes and participation diplomas were also awarded by the sponsors, as well as by the Center for Excellence in Polymer Processing (CEPP).
 
The team formed by master’s student Mihaita NASTASE and Dan SPINU from the Faculty of Engineering, coordinated by Professor Catalin FETECAU, took the first prize with the project 3D printed 1/12 scale radio controlled car.
 
The 1st edition of this competition was organized in 2019 by the Faculty of Engineering of “Dunarea de Jos” University of Galati and the 3rd edition in 2023 will return, again, to Galati.
