World Hepatitis Day is marked every year on July 28 as a tribute to Doctor Samuel Baruch Blumberg, who identified HBsAg, the most important marker of HBV-a infection, and received the Nobel Prize for Medicine. The date represents a good opportunity to address the problems related to viral hepatitis in a constructive dialogue with civil society, the mass media, and the authorities, thus stimulating all the necessary actions to eliminate viral hepatitis by the year 2030.

Global efforts are moving towards the eradication of chronic infections caused by viruses B, C, and D, which are responsible for 95% of deaths caused by hepatitis.

It is estimated that about 4.5 million premature deaths could be prevented in low- and middle-income countries by 2030 through vaccination, testing, diagnosis, antiviral treatment, information, and awareness.

On July 26, the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy from "Dunarea de Jos" University of Galati, in collaboration with the Clinical Hospital for Infectious Diseases" Saint Parascheva" from Galati and the Galati College of Physicians, marked World Hepatitis Day through a conference, which was attended by family doctors, infectious disease doctors, pediatricians, and internists as well as resident doctors from the four specialties. The lecturers were academic staff from the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy from Galati, and also from "Carol Davila" University of Bucharest. The theme of this year's event was "Hepatitis Can't Wait" with a focus on preventing BVD among pregnant women and newborns.

In Romania, World Hepatitis Day has been celebrated since 2011.
