International Women's Day with Science is marked annually on February 11 to encourage and support women's access and participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education, training, and research at all levels.

The holiday was approved by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly in 2015. Aims to stop any form of discrimination against women passionate about science, who must benefit free, fair and high quality from a top science education, but also increase the number of women in research. The latest data, from 2018 (according to media fax.ro) show that out of almost 15 million scientists and engineers in the European Union, 59% are men and 41% are women. The same percentage is registered in Romania, a member of the UE, regarding the share of females in research.

We welcome all women who have activities in the field of science, our laboratory partners, we congratulate them for all their work, and we assure them of unconditional support in the materialization of research results. “We wish them health, perseverance, and as much performance as possible in the field of research, technology, and innovation, performances that help us keep our place in the top 10 top universities in Romania”, said Professor Puiu Lucian Georgescu Ph.D., Rector of “Dunarea de Jos” University of Galati.

The International Day of Girls and Women with Science Activities was celebrated for the first time in 2016 at the UN headquarters from New York.
The most representative woman scientist in the world remains Marie Curie, the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in history and the only one who has won this distinction twice, for different fields: physics and chemistry. On its behalf, the European Researchers' Night is held annually to disseminate the results of research among young people in which the DJUG is an active partner.
