Professor Eugen RUSU, Ph.D., director of the Council for Doctoral Studies at “Dunarea de Jos” University of Galati and corresponding member of the Romanian Academy, will talk about renewable energy in the marine environment in the first edition of 2021 of the conference series „Moștenirea lui Asachi” (Asachi’s Heritage) organized by Gheorghe Asachi Technical University of Iasi, together with academician Bogdan SIMIONESCU, vice-president of the Romanian Academy.

The event will take place on Wednesday, February 24, at 12.00, on the Zoom platform. Professor Eugen RUSU is a professor at “Dunarea de Jos” University of Galati and a professor at the Center for Marine Technologies and Ocean Engineering at the University of Lisbon in Portugal. He specializes in the development of techniques for measuring and analyzing data from the marine environment is an expert of the European Commission and was a consultant researcher at NATO in 2005, at the Center for Maritime Research and Experimentation in Spezia, Italy.

Professor Eugen RUSU will present an analysis on the topic "Renewable energy in the marine environment in the context of climate change", starting from the hypothesis that climate change has become evident.

"According to analyzes by NASA, the global average temperature has risen since 1880 by about 0.8º Celsius, and 2/3 of this warming has been recorded since 1975. This relatively sharp rise in temperature has significant implications. Consequently, reducing emissions is an important step in reducing the impact of climate change. Obviously, this implies a transition to non-polluting energy resources, and the marine environment is a very important source in this direction ", said Professor Eugen RUSU.

It will present issues on Wednesday regarding the extraction of renewable energy from the marine environment, including the use of tools such as numerical models for waves and currents. Some of the conclusions reached by researchers using such numerical models are that the power of waves and winds will increase in the 2050s, especially in the western part of the Black Sea. But Professor Eugen Rusu says the predictions also indicate a substantial increase in the intensity of extreme events.

"Together with Professor Daniel CONDURACHE, we decided to open the series of conferences Asachi’s Heritage in 2021 with the presentation “Renewable energy from the marine environment in the context of climate change” given by Professor Eugen RUSU, corresponding member of the Romanian Academy. The subject is a topical one, the seas and oceans being an important source of renewable energy. I invite both those who want to know and the specialists in the field to join us at this conference that deals with such an interesting topic ", said academician Bogdan SIMIONESCU vice-president of the Romanian Academy.

The last edition of the conference series Asachi’s Heritage took place at the end of last year, and the guest was one of the organizers: academician Bogdan SIMIONESCU. Under the name "Cristofor Simionescu - The man from the scientist", academician Bogdan SIMIONESCU presented unknown details from the life and work of the great scientist and culture Cristofor Simionescu - the beginnings in the country, school, modest living, providential meetings that marked his entire career, responsibilities and great risks, pressures, friends and informers, the eternal struggle for school, Iasi and Moldova.

Invitations for those who want to attend the conference will be sent online.
The virtual camera opens on Wednesday 24 February at 11.30.
